{"id":229,"date":"2024-03-23T12:33:02","date_gmt":"2024-03-23T12:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/help-documentation\/?p=229"},"modified":"2024-03-23T12:33:02","modified_gmt":"2024-03-23T12:33:02","slug":"categories-tags-for-admins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/help-documentation\/categories-tags-for-admins\/","title":{"rendered":"Categories &amp; tags: For admins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Categories &amp; tags: For admins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Categories<\/strong>&nbsp;allow you to further organize the content of your site.&nbsp; Careful categorization allows your site posts to be grouped together with other similar posts on your site. &nbsp;This, in turn, helps users to better navigate your site.&nbsp; Note that all site posts are filed under categories. &nbsp;If you do not create your own post categories, all of the posts on your site will be placed in the default category, \u201cUncategorized.\u201d&nbsp; In general, once you create categories, and assign posts to those categories, these categories do not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tags<\/strong>\u00a0can also help users better navigate your site. \u00a0A tag is a keyword that describes some or all of the content of a post, and a post may have several different tags. \u00a0Similar to categories, tags will group posts together with similarly tagged posts. \u00a0Tags can also be displayed in a \u201ctag cloud.\u201d \u00a0A tag cloud is a visual representation of the tags on your site, where tags that are most often assigned to posts appear larger in text size (and vice versa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Categories vs. Tags<\/strong>: A common way of explaining the difference between categories and tags is that categories are similar to the table of contents for a book, whereas tags are more like the index. Categories tend to be broader, and tags are more specific. Only admins can create categories, but authors can create tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-16bf90a3-fdf1-44e4-b8c8-d908d3a5a59d\">Categories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. On the following screen, assign a name to your new category and click&nbsp;<strong>Add New Category<\/strong>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also optionally assign a \u201cslug\u201d for your category and\/or a \u201cparent\u201d category. You can assign a category to a post on your site by creating a new post or editing an existing post. You\u2019ll find categories in the\u00a0<strong>Document settings<\/strong>\u00a0sidebar panel. Be sure you\u2019re viewing the Document rather than Block tab, and if you don\u2019t see the settings sidebar, click the\u00a0<strong>gear icon<\/strong>\u00a0at the top of the page, to the right of the Publish button. To add a category, check the box next to the appropriate category in the\u00a0<strong>Categories<\/strong>\u00a0section.\u00a0 You can also add categories here, by clicking\u00a0<strong>Add New Category<\/strong>\u00a0at the bottom of the Categories section. To edit a post category, edit the post, make any necessary changes to the category, and click&nbsp;<strong>Publish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-3fc5b924-09ee-4773-8cf9-0d6a1b08c33f\">Tags<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. To assign a tag to a post on your site, go to your site Dashboard and click\u00a0<strong>Posts &gt; Add New<\/strong>. \u00a0You\u2019ll find tags in the\u00a0<strong>Document settings<\/strong>\u00a0sidebar panel. Be sure you\u2019re viewing the Document rather than Block tab, and if you don\u2019t see the settings sidebar, click the\u00a0<strong>gear icon<\/strong>\u00a0at the top of the page, to the right of the Publish button.
