{"id":117,"date":"2024-03-08T22:12:52","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T22:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/knowledge-bank\/?page_id=117"},"modified":"2024-04-12T14:54:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T14:54:46","slug":"how-to-paraphrase","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/knowledge-bank\/how-to-paraphrase\/","title":{"rendered":"How to paraphrase"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">By <strong>Kate Moss, Ph.D<\/strong>, Doctoral Lecturer and Full-time Faculty, General Education &amp; BA in Liberal Studies\nWriting Fellows (WAC) and Tutoring Coordinator<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>When you use information from a source, you may do one of three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Summarize<\/strong> the information and cite the source;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quote<\/strong> the source directly and cite the source; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paraphrase<\/strong> the material thoroughly and cite the source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paraphrasing<\/strong> is an important skill to master as you will use it in any writing that uses source material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To paraphrase sufficiently, you need to both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Put the author\u2019s ideas into your own words, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change the structure of the sentence or passage, so you are not copying that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common mistake we see with paraphrasing is not paraphrasing sufficiently.&nbsp; It\u2019s very important that you thoroughly paraphrase in order to avoid academic integrity issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful links:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/owl.excelsior.edu\/research\/drafting-and-integrating\/drafting-and-integrating-paraphrasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cParaphrasing\u201d from Excelsior OWL<\/a> explains why paraphrasing is important and gives examples of how to put source material into your own words.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/owl.excelsior.edu\/research\/drafting-and-integrating\/drafting-and-integrating-paraphrasing-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cParaphrasing Structure\u201d from Excelsior OWL<\/a> explains why it\u2019s important to change the structure of the sentence or passage when paraphrasing, and how to do this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In \u201cFinding, Using and Citing Sources in APA Format\u201d (2021), SPS Writing Fellow Kajal Patel gives tips on paraphrasing and shares examples of insufficiently and sufficiently paraphrased source material.
