Was it one where you got to choose what you investigated or how you demonstrated your learning? When we give students choice in what they learn or how they demonstrate their learning, we promote engagement, metacognition, and autonomy. When we give students a voice in shaping course policies, practices, or units, we promote agency. For the first-time undergraduate, opportunities for \u201cvoice and choice\u201d are opportunities for intellectual growth that leads to independence. For the adult learner, such opportunities recognize the maturity already attained and contextualize it within the discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plan for the Week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1SQ6wn75WM9z-9T3jIs57gsmouT7xCcERLQBAZ9RJEVw\/edit?usp=sharing\">Open for All Workshop Course Review Rubric<\/a>, go over your course, referring to the annotations related to the lens of student voice and choice. Identify opportunities to increase student agency with the DEIA educational practices in the annotations. Consider especially the starred annotations that rely on OER or Open Pedagogy. The Open Pedagogy project turned into an OER project in 2018, when faculty guided students to openly license their work. (Read more about the assignment\u2019s evolution in Ashley Shea\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/milnepublishing.geneseo.edu\/openpedagogyapproaches\/chapter\/building-a-collection-of-openly-licensed-student-developed-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Building a Collection of Openly Licensed Student-Developed Videos<\/a>.\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.kpu.ca\/tlcommons\/why-have-students-answer-questions-when-they-can-write-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why have students answer questions when they can write them?<\/a>&nbsp; &#8211; Rajiv Jhangiani, who, in the course of his teaching career has co-author of <a href=\"https:\/\/thatpsychprof.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three OER textbooks on psychology<\/a>, provides insight and guidance on student-generated assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lib.jmu.edu\/studio395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studio 395<\/a> &#8211; History podcasts from students at James Madison University illustrate the power of public-facing interviews on student-chosen topics&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/press.rebus.community\/makingopentextbookswithstudents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Guide to Making Open Textbooks with Students \u2013 Simple Book Publishing<\/a> &#8211;&nbsp; Both philosophical and practical, filled with case studies, sample assignments, and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kpu.pressbooks.pub\/businesswriting\/front-matter\/introduction\/\">Business Writing<\/a> &#8211; As noted in the About This Book section, students provided feedback on this adaptation of an OER text to improve it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo credit: Photo by Ian Schneider on Unsplash&nbsp; What was your favorite assignment in school?
