You will learn about the features and capabilities of the mobile app, and what to keep in mind when developing and interacting in your course to ensure it is accessible to students using the mobile app.<\/p>\n<h1>Mobile Apps: Blackboard Instructor and Blackboard<\/h1>\n<p>Blackboard Instructor is a mobile application that enables instructors to view course content, grade assignments, connect with students in discussion boards, and launch Blackboard Collaborate sessions. Once downloaded, search for \u201cCUNY &#8211; School of Professional Studies\u201d in the login screen for the app and log in using your Blackboard username and password.<\/p>\n<h1>Mobile application capabilities<\/h1>\n<h2>Instructor Mobile App<\/h2>\n<p>Instructors using the <em>Blackboard Instructor<\/em> app <strong>can<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create announcements\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">View uploaded assignment submissions, grade with a rubric, leave comments and annotations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read discussion board posts, create a thread, or post a reply<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enter a Collaborate session within the application\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Watch videos and view images\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">View mobile compatible tests. Note: only mobile compatible tests can be taken by students via the app (to create, click Assessments &gt; Mobile Compatible Test). Any instructions added to these links are not visible in the Blackboard mobile app.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that course links do not contain instructions or questions that aren\u2019t repeated anywhere else, but rather that these are placed on the relevant discussion forum or as an attachment to assignments. Also, since added text will not appear as part of the course link, make sure that the <strong>link title<\/strong> is clear about where the course link will redirect to (for instance, \u201cWeek 1 Discussion\u201d, or \u201cContinue to Assignments section\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Week-1-Desktop-View.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2090\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Week-1-Desktop-View.png?resize=531%2C157&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Discussion boards<\/h2>\n<p>It is best practice to add the description\/instructions in the discussion board forums, not on the weekly links which redirect to these forums or the discussion board area.<\/p>\n<p>With the mobile app, Instructors can read, reply, and start a discussion board thread but cannot grade discussion board assignments. To learn more about discussion boards within the Blackboard application, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Blackboard_App\/Discussions\">Blackboard Help\u2019s guide on Discussion Boards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Assignments<\/h2>\n<p>It is important to keep in mind that in the mobile app, any instructions added for assignments can only be seen by students once they click on \u201cStart Attempt\u201d at the bottom of their screen. Any file attachments to course links will appear under \u201cAttachments\u201d at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Assignment-mobile-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2091 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Assignment-mobile-1.png?resize=172%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Blogs, Wikis, Journals<\/h2>\n<p>Blogs, wikis, and journals launch in a browser, not within the mobile application. Add instructions directly in the blog\/wiki\/journal when creating these assignments, not on course links to an individual blog\/wiki\/journal within the weeks. When creating these, choose \u201cLink to a Blog\/Wiki\/Journal\u201d instead of \u201cLink to the Blogs\/Wiki\/Journals Page\u201d as students might accidentally choose the wrong blog\/wiki\/journal when navigating in the mobile app.<\/p>\n<p>With the mobile app, instructors cannot view or grade blogs, wikis, or journals<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tests<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructors cannot create tests through the mobile app, only through the desktop browser.\u00a0 In order for students to be able to take a test through the mobile application, instructors should use the \u201cMobile Compatible\u201d Test tool. For more information, please visit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Course_Content\/Mobile_Friendly_Courses\/Supported_Course_Content_in_Blackboard_App#tests-original-courses_OTP-5\">Blackboard Help\u2019s \u201cMobile Compatible Test\u201d support page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the \u201cMobile Compatible Test\u201d tool, there are various question types available however only Multiple Choice and True\/False questions are graded by the system. Please note that instructors can only view the test questions but they can view a student\u2019s results and they cannot manually grade tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Groups<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure to add group descriptions and instructions when creating the group, not on course links to the group area. Also, ensure to enroll students during group creation. Students will be able to see their assigned group through the app. Specific tool descriptions within the groups are difficult to view (for instance, a description for the group discussion board is cut off in the mobile app).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For this reason, it is best to add instructions to the group area or provide the instructions for the group work in a separate place, for instance, as an item in the relevant week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Videos<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If adding a video to your course, add a description and a note indicating students to click on the expand icon in the corner of the video. This is good practice to give students context about what they will view, and how to best view the video.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 1.71429rem;margin-bottom: 1.71429rem;font-size: 1.28571rem\">Images<\/h2>\n<p>When adding an image, it is advised to upload an image into an item or file alongside a description and a note indicating students to click on the paperclip on the top right of their app screen (description is separate from the image file requiring students to click on the paperclip icon to view image file).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2148\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?resize=300%2C182&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?resize=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?resize=1024%2C622&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?resize=768%2C466&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/07\/Image-file.jpg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>File attachments<\/h2>\n<p>When attaching files to an item in your course site, make sure to mention that students using the mobile application will have to click on a paperclip icon on the top-right hand side to view the files. Please use only <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Course_Content\/Mobile_Friendly_Courses\/Supported_Files_in_Apps\">supported file types<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Collaborate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructors can start a Blackboard Collaborate session within the app but they cannot create a \u201cCourse Room\u201d. To learn more about the Collaborate tool within the Blackboard application, please visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Blackboard_Instructor\/Collaborate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blackboard Help\u2019s guide on Collaborate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>VoiceThread<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructors cannot create VoiceThreads within the Blackboard app. Students and instructors need to download the VoiceThread app in order to use it within the mobile course. VoiceThread has provided a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/voicethread.com\/howto-categories\/mobile-app\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">useful site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which contains information about how to register in the app, how to view VoiceThreads, and how to create them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will be prompted to download the VoiceThread app when they click on the VT link (if the instructor has already created the VT within their browser). In the browser view, students can view a description but not in the app.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Grades<\/h2>\n<p>Instructors can grade submitted assignments through the mobile app. They can see attachments, provide feedback, add in a grade using Blackboard rubrics, create annotations, and leave comments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Grade-assignment-view-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2092\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Grade-assignment-view-1.png?resize=188%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Box-view-grading-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2093\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/sps-faculty-community-hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/05\/Box-view-grading-1.png?resize=202%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Grade assignment view within BB instructor app\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Box view grading within BB instructor app<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Please note that Instructors cannot grade discussions, blogs, wikis, journals, group submissions, or tests in the app.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The recording of student access to the course site might not be accurate when students use the mobile app. For example, the Performance Dashboard and the Grade Center will not record students\u2019 access data when they enter the course through the mobile app. This means that, even when students have entered the course, they might still appear as \u201cNever\u201d having accessed the course in either tool.
