This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to create groups in Brightspace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Brightspace, groups are set up within <strong>categories<\/strong>. For example, you might have a category called \u201cFinal Project,\u201d and within that category, you can create five groups, each of which will work together toward a final group project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Attention:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who officially withdraw (W) will still appear in group enrollments. Make sure to check the Groups Enrollment list against your Classlist when enrolling students in Groups.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steps for Creating Groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the course navigation bar, click \u2018<strong>Tools<\/strong>\u2019 and select \u2018<strong>Groups<\/strong>\u2019 from the dropdown menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfF7sUCYV5lNyZpN-hbVkUmi-g80Qe7xm9sRA6a-HtN20pNIpiXCuFyChbAHuuD3RxM0OFTIMY-hfQB17-gupTY_WK25XNbUuWceRNB1kur3yQ5bmboBC0kT_04EHu5Zhg14IQ7QkpQZ-79NpSM2KYTZkM?key=OC7-uPPhu9mGx66A7ui-BA\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:735px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>Manage Groups<\/strong> page, create new groups [category] by clicking the <strong>New Category<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXesbP0GJhT4WgDuFl0v3gsCqvxSzePrPlzAe8218VgB50oK7csasjwn0yWKbhU-uLASrpDXla4ZjWvGB7bNjmKfGOir4A2AKxntXsm_q-JxsP5MU_8LlY60jVM09CyTo_ItQnrreJ2o-jyqetA6mSlk1Lk?key=OC7-uPPhu9mGx66A7ui-BA\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:740px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What is a category? If students stay in the <em>same <\/em>group throughout the course, you will have only one category. Officially Withdrawn (W) students will not appear in the Classlist but may appear in groups.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Groups of # &#8211; Self Enrollment: <\/strong>set the group capacity and students will be able to self-enroll in groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong># of Groups &#8211; Self-Enrollment: <\/strong>set the total number of groups and students will be able to self-enroll<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong># of Groups, Capacity of # &#8211; Self Enrollment: <\/strong>set both the number of groups and group capacity and students will be able to self-enroll<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Single user, member-specific groups: <\/strong>set up groups of 1<br><em>Note: this option is useful for student journals<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more detailed information about enrollment types, please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/community.d2l.com\/brightspace\/kb\/articles\/3483-create-categories-and-groups\">Creating categories and groups<\/a> (D2L Community).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note, based on the Enrollment Type you selected, you\u2019ll need to complete fields related to the number of groups, number of users per group, and other relevant enrollment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose the <strong>Groups of #<\/strong> or <strong># of Groups<\/strong> enrollment types, you will have three additional options under <strong>Advanced Properties<\/strong>. Select those group options based on your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfNY-Yb2ymz_qlodfOL_upmx5vrFbgQoCbA9x6idCSxNvezfpKvpwMgdVdTygIj4cwz64CR4A95bTTloDwFWfsCQrg9l9y_g8PxcyFLJLMyw_F1uWiY0gFLN6tE5w-hbG3Oy1GA1ABxY0oIwNnz_abbO5N6?key=OC7-uPPhu9mGx66A7ui-BA\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:726px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Auto-enroll new users:<\/strong> If enabled, this option automatically assigns any new students who join the course later to a group within this category.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Randomize users in groups: <\/strong>students will be enrolled into groups in a random order. If disabled, students will be placed into groups according to their order in the classlist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make category and group descriptions visible to group members.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set up Group Workspaces<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under <strong>Additional Options<\/strong>, select which one(s) you would like to incorporate:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcl_Wp7nGsZX2VHNT7xEAiPqzg0ShRNTSVqNZmVsDXDgcmU_gMGpJXLG_wEOfF2b_NHnLqO--jTCVsR18UbIk2V6WCRdTuVvDVxEMWUlgeGpCgAYQ-wtDndFKDLGh1uDGufsYCLCJatpymnlZbw80vXm3A5?key=OC7-uPPhu9mGx66A7ui-BA\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:509px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Set up Discussion areas:<\/strong> Enabling this option will create a discussion item that is accessible only to group members. The instructor will also be able to view and participate in the discussion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set up lockers: <\/strong>A Group Locker gives your students the possibility to quickly and easily share files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set up assignment submission folders: <\/strong>Selecting this option allows you to create an Assignment immediately, which will be linked to these groups and enable group submissions. If you have already created the assignment, or if you prefer to create a group assignment at a later time, you can skip this step and instead follow <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/teaching-guides\/2024\/11\/04\/set-up-group-assignments-in-brightspace\/\">these instructions<\/a> to set up group submissions for a Brightspace assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After settings are complete, click \u2018<strong>Save<\/strong>\u2019.
