{"id":648,"date":"2025-02-06T12:11:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T17:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/teaching-guides\/?p=648"},"modified":"2025-09-19T11:39:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T15:39:35","slug":"updating-names-of-gradebook-items","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/teaching-guides\/2025\/02\/06\/updating-names-of-gradebook-items\/","title":{"rendered":"Updating Names of Gradebook Items"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you <strong>rename a discussion Board topic, a quiz, or an assignment in the Content or Activities areas in a course, the name does not automatically update in the related\/associated item <\/strong>in the Grades area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We suggest following any <strong>update to the name of a graded item<\/strong> in a course with navigation to <strong>Grades<\/strong>&gt;<strong>Manage Grades <\/strong>and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>clicking the down arrow to the right of the name of the Gradebook column item and clicking <strong>Edit<\/strong> from the dropdown:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXen4J3yytco1Wb0a4VwWAhUB1E-HkEotl4Q0KnXeVKlRk8He03tWz2O6SWo-Xq1Ns54UeKCdpHz5fglG3m4qArOcliYQmsKoHMiaDnIUjCiD2lRF92DjliQfEQrZKY1xKZV1SVF?key=qdDkSZIPXxzaGsMIvr96hrTh\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and then typing the new name into the <strong>Name<\/strong> fields, (using a shorter version in the \u201cShort Name\u201d field, if desired), and clicking the <strong>Save and Close<\/strong> button:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXeuD3OIJOv40ROhI-wIGL-e9OOk5ZYNDWKDQoz-a2Ht0KWAuB3azNmHyAzvgFWQ2cwdBR0afwquF1GrjMe3z7wjfJmb0e9xa1JBn_eqaz3Sw_6V9eETND-BNzYVc5bRLDv_ZSGNxg?key=qdDkSZIPXxzaGsMIvr96hrTh\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to <strong>quickly copy in the name as it was updated in the associated item in the course content area<\/strong>, you can click and drag over the title as it appears in the <strong>Association<\/strong> field (highlighted in first line above) and copy\/paste that text into the <strong>Name<\/strong> field(s) and then save by clicking <strong>Save and Close<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOTE: The inverse is true as well: <strong>if you make a change to the name of a grade item in the Grades area<\/strong>, Brightspace does <strong>not<\/strong> automatically update the name of the related item back in the Content or Activities areas of the course. Whenever you change the name of a graded item in Brightspace, be sure to update it in both the course area and in Grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still have questions?
