{"id":6009,"date":"2023-09-13T17:47:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T17:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thekiosk.net\/?p=6009"},"modified":"2025-06-19T17:03:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T17:03:05","slug":"how-to-get-the-most-out-of-baruch-colleges-cuny-sps-library-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/the-kiosk\/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-baruch-colleges-cuny-sps-library-services\/","title":{"rendered":"How to get the most out of Baruch College\u2019s CUNY SPS library services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-advanced-heading  root-eb-advance-heading-w9gzp\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-advance-heading-w9gzp \"><div class=\"eb-advance-heading-wrapper eb-advance-heading-w9gzp button-1\" data-id=\"eb-advance-heading-w9gzp\"><h1 class=\"eb-ah-title\">How to get the most out of Baruch College\u2019s CUNY SPS library services<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivan De Luce || September 13, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most online universities aren\u2019t lucky enough to provide access to a physical library, CUNY SPS students can walk into Baruch College\u2019s Newman Library, also part of the CUNY system, anytime for a range of in-person services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s sort of an unusual situation where a library for [one] school provides library services to another school,\u201d said Joseph Hartnett, a professor and librarian at Newman Library, who also serves as the primary point of contact for CUNY SPS at the library. Newman Library has served as CUNY SPS\u2019s main library ever since the first online degree was introduced by the School in 2006, Hartnett added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the remote nature of CUNY SPS and its students often living far from Manhattan, Hartnett said that students visit all the time with questions about research or for help with troubleshooting issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo students at CUNY SPS, we are your home library,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich means not only can they come and visit but they can also get remote access to all the resources that are available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those resources include everything from remote access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baruch online database<\/a>, and the ebooks and other research materials available there, to reference services and classroom instruction, Hartnett said. <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/students\/borrowing-library-materials\/course-reserves-and-textbooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electronic course reserves<\/a> also allow faculty to gather all readings for any given class in one folder, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reference services at Newman Library include <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/help\/schedule-a-research-consultation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online research consultations<\/a>, where students can meet with librarians to help them focus their research and pick out relevant sources of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hartnett has also created a <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.newman.baruch.cuny.edu\/sb.php?subject_id=158490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research guide for each CUNY major<\/a>. The museum studies research guide, for example, has pretty much anything a museum studies student could need in terms of helpful books to read, museum journals and databases, citation guides, grant resources, and \u201cOneSearch hacks\u201d to help students navigate searching through the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who don\u2019t want <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/students\/library-instruction\/online-tutorials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-directed tutorials or videos<\/a>, Hartnett hosts a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/students\/library-instruction\/workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">library and citation workshops<\/a> throughout the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In person, students can visit the group study room dedicated for CUNY SPS students on Newman\u2019s fifth floor. Aside from checking out books, they can also <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/students\/borrowing-library-materials\/technology-loan-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">borrow laptops<\/a> and use the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.baruch.cuny.edu\/students\/scanning-and-printing-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">printers and scanners<\/a> on the second floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the fall 2023 semester begins, Hartnett is already introducing new students to the library\u2019s services. The first online workshop of the semester, on using Zotero for citations, will take place on September 21, 2023 at 12:30pm virtually over Zoom.
