{"id":6454,"date":"2023-11-06T22:31:35","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T22:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thekiosk.net\/?p=6454"},"modified":"2025-06-19T16:18:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T16:18:17","slug":"fall-journalism-workshop-series-continues-with-anatomy-of-a-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.sps.cuny.edu\/the-kiosk\/fall-journalism-workshop-series-continues-with-anatomy-of-a-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall Journalism Workshop Series Continues with Anatomy of a Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-advanced-heading  root-eb-advance-heading-w9gzp\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-advance-heading-w9gzp \"><div class=\"eb-advance-heading-wrapper eb-advance-heading-w9gzp button-1\" data-id=\"eb-advance-heading-w9gzp\"><h1 class=\"eb-ah-title\">Fall Journalism Workshop Series Continues with Anatomy of a Story<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ivan De Luce || November 6, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever wondered why journalists use phrases like \u201cburying the lead\u201d or terms like \u201cnut graph,\u201d or why these words are sometimes spelled \u201clede\u201d and \u201cnut graf\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To answer these questions and many more at the heart of what makes a great news story, <em>The Kiosk<\/em> held the second workshop in its <a href=\"https:\/\/thekiosk.net\/kiosk-kicks-off-workshop-series\/\">Fall 2023 Journalism Workshop Series<\/a>. The workshop, which focused mainly on the anatomy of a news story and identifying sources, was offered on October 24 virtually via Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop was hosted by Katina Paron, who serves as the editor of Dateline: CUNY. Paron has spent years as a journalism educator, and has also authored the book \u201cA NewsHound\u2019s Guide to Student Journalism,\u201d an indispensable introduction to writing for school newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To kick off the workshop, Paron focused on the anatomy of a news story, or all the parts that come together to create what readers expect from a story. To start most stories, reporters need a \u201clead\u201d (also spelled as \u201clede\u201d to not get it confused with the correctly spelled words of a story draft). The lead is the first sentence that draws the reader in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lead is a flashlight that you shine into the well of the story,\u201d Paron explained by way of paraphrasing writer John McPhee. \u201cYou don&#8217;t have to see all the way to the bottom. Just far enough to know what you&#8217;re getting into.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead can come in many forms. Here are a few that Paron mentioned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>News\/summary: <\/strong>Breaking news stories tend to start with these leads, which get straight to the point and explain what happened up front.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anecdotal:<\/strong> This slower, more descriptive lead starts the story with a small anecdote to illustrate a larger point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>List:<\/strong> These leads draw the reader in with a list of things pertaining to the story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Startling statement:<\/strong> Sometimes, shocking the reader with a crucial fact or detail will keep them reading, but it\u2019s important to avoid clickbait-like tactics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wordplay:<\/strong> If the headline wasn\u2019t enough of a chance to get punny, the lead might be a good chance to elicit a chuckle from the reader.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story you\u2019re reading, for example, uses a mix of the list and anecdotal leads and asks a question or two to draw the reader in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paron also quoted from one of the best writing handbooks a reporter can buy, \u201cOn Writing Well\u201d by William Zinsser: \u201cThe most important sentence in any article is the first one. If it doesn&#8217;t induce the reader to proceed to the second sentence, your article is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the lead comes the \u201cnut graph,\u201d a paragraph that sums up the story in a nutshell, usually right after the lead, Paron explained. Breaking news stories sometimes skip leads altogether and go straight into the nut graph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nut graph \u201csummarizes the results of your reporting,\u201d Paron said. \u201cIt&#8217;s the \u2018what was, what&#8217;s new and what&#8217;s now.\u2019 So what was happening? What&#8217;s new and why does it matter? What&#8217;s happening now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the lead and the nut graph, quotes are the third crucial element of a story. The key to getting good quotes begins with finding the right sources, Paron said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t know the answers, but we are in charge of finding out the answers,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don&#8217;t need to know the information, but we need to find the right people with that information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, sources, a combination of interviews and research, are so important that they take up 95% of most stories, Paron added. To find the right people, reach out to who is directly involved in the story, who might be directly impacted by it, who made the decision for the story to happen, and who has personal or professional experience on the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExperts can be anything,\u201d Paron said. \u201cI love to say, especially about young people and about students, that students are the experts of their own experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paron\u2019s workshop covered much more than the points mentioned here, but this should serve as a useful starting point for any aspiring journalist.
