Keep your educational video script digestible by focusing on 3-5 key takeaways that can be concisely conveyed to the viewer. Most people don’t want to watch an hour-long lecture, especially on a website service or product page, so keep it brief and to the point.

2. Educational video script template

Script: Welcome and thanks for checking out this video introducing the CUNY SPS OpenLab! [OL homepage] OpenLab is a collaborative digital platform built by CUNY, for CUNY, from BuddyPress and WordPress, two popular content management systems used on the web across industries. [Accompanying visual: slide displaying WP %s and WP/BP logos]

Intro: Quickly introduce the topic. Be sure to include why it’s important so viewers know why they should watch the whole thing.

Script: [Back to OL homepage] This video is designed for CUNY SPS staff, faculty, and students. If you’re an active member of the CUNY SPS community, you can sign up or sign in seamlessly using your CUNY login information. [Share signup/sign in button locations, provide SSO example workflow onscreen] Users can create their own groups, join existing projects or student organizations.

Takeaways: Provide 3-5 tips, facts, or other kinds of takeaways. Give a short bit of context or background and go straight into the takeaway. You want to keep these rather short, so only provide the necessary details.

Here’s an educational video script template you can use:

Script: This video will introduce some of the coolest features available on the CUNY SPS OpenLab. We’re going to start by checking out the user profile [screenshare of navigating to the user profile from logged-in homescreen], where you can share your academic interests, any contact information, a short bio, your pronouns, and any other info you want to share with other CUNY SPS community members. All of these fields are OPTIONAL, so if you have privacy concerns for any reason, you’re welcome to use an anonymized handle instead of your legal or chosen name. [profile edit settings] The only connection between your OL account and your official CUNY records happens on the backend of the site, which only site administrators can view. You can choose how you display your own information, including what information you share at all.

Now, from the user profile, you’ll be able to quickly navigate to any groups you have joined! When you’re brand-new to the site, you won’t see any items listed here, but there’s a simple way to join groups! Many of the groups on the OL are OPEN, which means you’re easily able to opt into group updates by joining a public group, like The Open Road [Share active user’s profile view, then navigate to homepage and click into one group type from the homepage to view “join” button on group profile]. Once you join a group, you’ll be subscribed to email notifications when there is new content published to the group site! [share email settings options within group profile] This can be a great way to reach folks easily to announce upcoming events or other time-sensitive updates.

Hook: Grab the reader’s attention, and clearly identify what they will be learning in the video.

[Back to homepage] One final item to note: because the CUNY SPS OpenLab has a dot-edu domain (meaning the web address ends in “.edu”), any public content that you publish can be easily found using a search engine, such as Google or Bing. [navigate to google.com and run an OL search] This can be a huge asset during job or internship searches, if you’re seeking a wider audience for your project or club, or to help you find additional groups that interest you on the OpenLab! Try navigating to Google and searching for “SOMETHING ON THE OPENLAB CUNY SPS” and see what you can find!

Call to Action: Where should the viewer go next? Do you have an additional resource they can view? Want them to join your email list? Clearly communicate their next step here. You may even want to embed a link in the video so they can click it and go!

Script: Thanks so much for watching. [Nav back to OpenLab homepage, logged out view, highlight sign up button] Get started today by signing up from openlab.sps.cuny.edu [can we include a clickable link embedded into the video?] and clicking “sign up” from the homepage. Once you’ve successfully entered your required information, you’ll be able to start exploring and joining public groups on the OpenLab! We definitely recommend joining The Open Road, which is the in-house OpenLab team’s site where we share OL news, updates, and exciting new features we have available on the site for your use! [Nav down homepage to “In the Spotlight” > The Open Road]

4. Product tour or explainer video script template

Explainer videos, similar to how-to or educational videos, should present the information in a way that is easy to understand. To avoid overwhelming the viewer, break down the topic into smaller chunks and omit unnecessary or irrelevant details. The main goal of an explainer video is to provide an overview of a product, service, or concept, so it’s important to stay focused on that objective.

Use this explainer video script to get started:

Hook/Intro

Describe what you will be explaining in the video and why the viewer should care about this topic.

Main Points/Features/Steps

Take the viewer through 3-5 points that guide them through the product, service, or process that you are explaining. Keep these concise, and don’t include any unnecessary information.

Conclusion/CTA

What should the viewer walk away with? Reiterate the importance of what you have explained. Then, include a CTA that brings them to the next step in the journey, whether that’s to buy something or get additional information.
