FILM CLUB SPOTLIGHT: “INSIDE OUT”

“Grandma, do you want to watch a movie tonight?”

“Sure,” I replied. “As a matter of fact, I signed up to watch ‘Inside Out’ with a school club. Have you seen it?” He had, but he still wanted to join me.

As we watched the movie that was shared virtually by the Film Club last spring, my grandson also watched the engagement in the chat. The “No broccoli on pizza” comment in the Zoom chat made him laugh. Most of the comments did. He wanted to respond, but I stopped him in his tracks. “Let’s just watch the movie,” I said.

My takeaway from the movie was that it is okay to be sad. As a matter of fact, it is sometimes necessary. And it made sense that “Riley” and her family relocating to a new place would cause her to have a slew of emotions: fear, anger, sadness, etc. Sometimes we try to hide what we are going through. We try to mask our feelings with joy. In the movie, the character Joy learned that her colleague Sadness should not be pushed aside. Once Sadness was embraced, healing began.

Kudos to the Film Club on its flick pick, an animated choice that served as a reminder to manage our emotions appropriately rather than attempt to mask them and was an opportunity to get in some quality time with my grandson.
