Letter from the Editor: Team Tortoise or Team Hare?
Greetings CUNY SPS,
I am so excited, and I feel so important! I am in the honeymoon stage of my new position as Editor-in-Chief of The Kiosk, our very own student-run newspaper.
A little about me, the editor: I enjoy helping writers structure their work to share with others. Editing is a task, but the end result is the reward! I know this because I have a publishing company that I established in 2011, and what a joy it is to help clients see their work through to the finish line.
A little about me, the student: I deem myself the “Turtle of Academic Studies,” which simply means I take one course per semester. I started studies here in 2017 and completed the Human Relations bachelor’s degree program, minoring in Psychology, in 2024. I am currently working toward earning the Business Management and Leadership master’s degree. You may know me as president of MELO (Management and Entrepreneur Leadership Organization is a student club), and yes, I am still president of MELO.
Editor ✔. Student ✔. Now, back to me, the self-proclaimed Turtle of Academic Studies. I remember the story I learned as a child. My imperfect recollection of “The Tortoise and the Hare” is that a turtle and a rabbit had a race, the turtle took its time, yet it still beat the rabbit because the rabbit exhausted itself. Upon reviewing the story today, that is not exactly how the story went. Nevertheless, the story led me to this question: Are you “Team Tortoise” or “Team Hare”? I ask because I recall a discussion a colleague and I had on the topic. This was back when I was a Human Relations student. I argued, “I need a life outside of schoolwork.” She argued, “I am not spending ten years in college!” Both are valid positions.
The Kiosk wants to know: What is your academic pace; are you Team Tortoise or Team Hare? Please complete this survey to take part in this collective writing experience. We would love to hear your thoughts.
