Overview
Exemptions in Brightspace allow instructors to remove individual grade items from students’ final grade calculations. This can be useful for excusing students from assignments or tests or for dropping an assessment from the final grade for the whole class. Below are two ways to set exemptions: set exemptions by graded item and set exemptions by learner.
Setting Exemptions by Graded Item
- Go to your course’s gradebook by selecting Grades from the course navigation bar.
- From the Enter Grades page of the grade book, locate the grade item that you want to add exemptions for.
- Open the dropdown menu for the item, at the top of the column, and select Enter Grades.
- On the next page, select the checkbox beside the name(s) of the student(s) you would like to exempt from the assessment. You can exempt the whole class by selecting the checkbox on the top left of the table. Select the Exempt option above the table.
- Click Save to proceed.
Remove an Exemption for a Learner
To remove an exemption for a learner, select the checkbox beside the learner’s name on the same page. Click the Unexempt option above the table. Click Save to record the change.
Setting Exemptions by Learner
- Select Grades from the course navigation bar.
- On the Enter Grades page, find the student’s row. Click the chevron icon beside the student’s name and select Bulk edit exemptions.
- On the next page, select the checkboxes for the grade items from which you want to exempt the learner.
Click Save to proceed.
If you’d like to remove exemptions for an individual learner, navigate to the same page, unselect the grade items, and save your changes.
