This guide explains how to adjust grades for individual students within a group assignment in Brightspace. By overriding individual grades, instructors can account for unique contributions or situations while maintaining the integrity of the group grading process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Brightspace Assignment grading interface overrides changes made in the gradebook. If you wish to grade the group as a whole and then make individual adjustments, always make the individual adjustments second and do not update the group grade from the assignment grading interface after doing so.

Steps to Override Grades in a Group Assignment

If you’d like to override the grade for an individual student and also to provide them with written feedback:

  1. In your course, select Grades in the navigation bar.
  1. On the Enter Grades tab, to view members of a single group, use the View By selector, choose Groups, and click Apply. Then, select the specific group you wish to view and click Apply again.
  1. Locate the grade column for the group assignment. From the column dropdown menu, select Enter Grades.
  1. On the next page, find the student whose grade you wish to override and adjust their grade in the input field. If needed, provide written feedback for the student in the feedback section by clicking the pencil icon.
  1. Click Save to proceed.

If you wish to override the numerical grade, without modifying the individual written feedback for a student,

  1. On the Enter Grades page, select Switch to Spreadsheet View to see text input fields in the grades.

Note: If you see Switch to Standard View instead of Switch to Spreadsheet View, you are already in Spreadsheet View.

In the table, locate the assignment’s grade column and enter the individual’s adjusted grade.

Click Save to proceed.
