Overview
With the integration of Panopto in Brightspace, faculty can create assignments that include the submission of Panopto videos created by their students.
This guide will detail the steps instructors need to take to create Panopto video assignments.
Panopto Background
By default, all students have Viewer privileges on Panopto, meaning that they can only view Panopto content shared with them. To create or upload content to Panopto, students must have their permissions set to Creator for Submitted Assignment Videos. This can easily be done by creating an Assignment Folder in your Panopto Portal.
Note: The assignment folder will not copy from a Dev site to a live site. An assignment folder must be created in the live section of each course that has a Panopto video assignment, in order for the permissions to be accurate for each student.
Adjusting Student Permissions on Panopto
To start, log into Brightspace and navigate to the Panopto module, and open the Panopto Video Portal.
Most SPS course sites will already have a module at the bottom of the table of contents called Panopto. If you don’t see a Panopto module in your course, then please follow these steps to create a Panopto module.
Select the More Actions icon ⋮ (the 3 vertical dots), followed by Settings.
From within the Overview tab, select Create Assignment Folder.
A link to the new assignment folder will automatically appear.
Note: The assignment folder’s name will be the same as the course site and the word assignments in brackets next to it.
Students will now be able to begin creating or uploading content to Panopto!
Creating a Panopto Video Assignment
Now that the students in the course have access to create and upload content to Panopto, you just need to create an assignment on Brightspace, or adjust an existing assignment.
When creating/adjusting your assignment, you must change the Submission Type to Text Submission, which can be found under the Submission & Completion accordion of the Assignment editor.
Note: Since Panopto is integrated directly into Brightspace, students do not need to upload video files as part of the grade submission. Students will be able to embed their Panopto videos in the Assignment text editor.
