The CUNY SPS Office of Student Life pulled off yet another splendid holiday event, properly titled Winter Wonderland. The virtual Winter Wonderland took place over Zoom on Wednesday December 13 — here is what you missed.
The virtual party began with a round of winter and holiday trivia questions. These trivia answers were fascinating, revealing that 40 degrees marks the warmest temperature for snowfall, -80 degrees stands as the coldest recorded temperature in the United States, and that the fear of snow even has a name: Chionophobia.
“We call it a Winter Wonderland because it tends to resonate with all students in terms of it bringing back memories from their adulthood or childhood,” said Student Life Coordinator Parshotam Lal. “We also call it a Winter Wonderland because it allows inclusivity of all students and doesn’t subject it to just one holiday.”
It was amusing to wrap our heads around these fun facts while beginning small talk around the correct answers. The trivia was a consistent highlight for the night, as students typed their answers in the chat, all while their responses were displayed on the shared screen. By the end of the event, a virtual karaoke session took place. Students boldly volunteered and stepped up to the mic, belting out lyrics of classics from “Jingle Bells,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Silent Night,” to Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me,” and Bob Marley’s “One Love.”
In the end, the Winter Wonderland celebration proved to be a resounding success, and a festive conclusion to the semester.
