When creating an assignment in a course site, instructors select the number of attempts students are able to submit. The default setting is one submission per assignment. If a student encounters a technical difficulty, it may be helpful to delete the student’s assignment submission and delete the record of the original submission, or to allow additional attempts. Once the instructor has deleted an original submission or enabled additional attempts students can resubmit the assignment.
Step 1
First, click “Grade Center” in your course site menu. From the dropdown options that appear, select “Assignments”
Step 2
Find the student row and assignment column. Hover over the grade (or yellow circle if the attempt has not been graded) and click the down arrow button that appears.
Step 3
In the dropdown that appears, click on “View Grade Details”
Step 4
Once the Grade Details page opens, click “Clear Attempt”. This will permanently erase the student’s assignment, which cannot be undone.
Alternatively, you may select “Ignore Attempt”. The student will be able to submit the assignment or test again, but the previous attempt will be kept, and the attempt will not be shown as “Needs Grading” or considered for grading purposes.
Step 5
To provide additional attempts for this student/assignment, click “Allow Additional Attempt”
This change is applied to one particular assignment for the student attempt you have selected. If you want to change the attempts for all students, you must edit the assignment itself.
